The size of the football field Asteroid skimmed past Earth

Little did people, including scientists at NASA know that a massive asteroid, the size of a football field, came really close to Earth.

EarthSky reported the asteroid, labelled 2018 GE3, came within about 192,300 kilometres of Earth at its closest point at 6.41pm on Sunday. The estimated diameter of the space rock ranged from 131 to 328 feet, CNEOS reports. Those asteroids, however, pose no threat to Earth.

The asteroid was first observed by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey project, based at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Lab in Tucson, Arizona. "Hours later, amateur astronomer Michael Jäger of Weißenkirchen Austria video-recorded the space rock gliding through the southern constellation Serpens", Spaceweather.com reported. If GE3 had entered Earth's atmosphere it could have caused similar, if not more severe, damage. There really is no telling, as mapping the impact trajectories of objects crashing down to Earth is notoriously hard, and scientists were left with just a few hours to scramble for this one.

Asteroid 2018 GE3 could be several times bigger than the meteor that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, five years ago, creating a shockwave that blew out thousands of windows in the city of Chelyabinsk, causing hundreds of minor injuries. According to a report, an asteroid may be broken into pieces while entering the earth atmosphere but this size asteroids won't do so.

"It doesn't take a very large object".

The giant asteroid, estimated to be between 47 and 100 metres in width, was flew by Earth at a speed of 106,000 kilometres per hour. This sized Astroid may make some regional damage according to its speed, angle and impact location.

A preliminary analysis of the orbit of 2018 GE shows this is the closest this particular space rock has come to Earth at least since 1930.

This is the unnoticed closest asteroid approach to the Earth ever.

The intensity of the light reflected off of 2018 GE3 indicates that it's between 157 feet and 360 feet wide.
