State Teachers Walkout is Over

As in West Virginia, rank-and-file teachers started the walkout movement by organizing on Facebook, at first without much help from unions. She says teachers, and the people of Oklahoma must support legislative candidates who will increase funding for education, and vote out those who will not.

While the Oklahoma Education Association said the walkout was over for it's members, it's not known if all the teachers will follow the union's lead.

After the announcement, a slew of school districts, including some of the largest in the state such as Tulsa and Broken Arrow, called school back into session for late this week or early next.

After nine days of national attention, the statewide teacher walkout in Oklahoma appears to be coming to an end.

Opinion studies revealed it'd garnered support among Oklahoma voters, a number of whom'd seen how students go to a in-state school week to conserve districts income and at educational institutions had to share school school and outdated textbooks.

The majority of the schools in Southern Oklahoma like Ardmore and Healdton stayed open this week and sent delegates to continue rallying at the capitol.

State Teachers Walkout is Over

Priest said OEA has been surveying its members since last week and that 70 percent of members doubted that continued efforts would enact legislative change needed. I'm glad teachers who participated in the union strike will return to teaching their students. TPS paid all of its support employees through April 6, but more than 500 didn't get paid this past week, which didn't sit well with their union leader.

After a media briefing with Treat on Thursday, several reporters approached OEA president Alicia Priest for clarification on their updated requests. Large districts like Bartlesville and Moore Public Schools will reopen today-but not without a fight.

"This is what I would call a one time in a generation event to make a stand and be public and I don't think teacher advocacy should end with the end of this walk out", Bein said.

The chairs in the rotunda have been filled for the past 9 days and now the OEA said despite hundreds of hours of chanting, meeting with lawmakers, and marching around the Capitol, they are ending their walkout and shifting their focus to getting more education supporters elected into office.

"I know most of the time, they d not have an opponent" says Terri Graves, a teacher from Quapaw Middle School.

They are going to the homes of each of their students to check on them and bring back anything that THE STUDENT might need...
