Samsung faces patent infringement lawsuit over biometrics

Encryption technology research firm PACid Technologies has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics for allegedly infringing upon its biometric patents. PACid Technologies, a company that deals with technology pertaining to encryption, claims that Samsung has used three of its biometric patents without licensing them. It adds that Samsung knew about PACid's patents since January 2017.

According to PACid, two USA patents (Patent 9,577,994 and 9,876,771) and one South Korean patent (named KR20110128567A) have been infringed upon. However, it has reached that stage by battling a number of patent litigation, including the one where Apple sued the South Korean company for copying its designs for the Galaxy smartphone. The specific phones named in the suit include the Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+, Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8+.

Multiple reports have suggested that PACid's business model revolves around such lawsuits, with The Investor suggesting that industry sources call PACid "a patent troll" that relies on "suing companies that actually develop and sell products based on loose interpretations of intellectual property regulations". The complaint was filed in the Texas Eastern District Court on April 6.

We're not sure if there is truth to the lawsuit because PACid is unknown but it has already filed similar ones against Nintendo, Apple, and Google.

Nevertheless, let's see how the Korean company will handle this particular lawsuit from PACid. If Samsung manages to deter this lawsuit then it will stop other patent trolls from copying the mechanism.
