Reliance Jio may launch laptops with cellular connectivity

For this concept, Jio is in talks with chipmaker Qualcomm could deliver a laptop that has a provision to insert a SIM card and convert it into a cellular-connected device, reports Economic Times.

Earlier, Reliance Jio had announced that it was increasing data allowances in all of its plans by 500MB without any increase in prices.

Qualcomm, in turn, is reported to be engaging the Indian company Smartron that specializes in Internet of Things (IoT) to develop laptops that can carry their Snapdragon 835 processor. "They could take the device and bundle it with data and content", Miguel Nunes, senior director of product management at Qualcomm Technologies, told ET.

Qualcomm has already started working on "Always Connected PC" with big shots like Asus, Lenovo and HP on global basis. Qualcomm is already closely working with Jio and Reliance Retail for the 4G feature phone.

Data is the new Oil! . The Internet is the backbone of nearly every computing and smart devices. The budget 4G laptop will come bundled with a Jio data pack.

After debuting with smartphones and later launching 4G feature phones and MiFi dongles in India, Reliance Jio's next bet is the prevalent laptop market in India.

As per Counterpoint data, close to five million laptops are sold every year in India with majority connecting to either enterprise or home or public WiFi spots. This kind of connection will be more secure than the conventional hotspot connections. In its bid to rival Reliance Jio's Rs 299 offer, Airtel has come up with a new plan offering unlimited calls, 2GB data per day for 28 days to pre paid subscribers at Rs 249. Reliance Jio knows about all kinds of devices which are accessing Jio's 4G data and hence knows the internet usage patterns, now this development will expand its reach to laptops as well which will help it in predictive analysis on how the data is being consumed. What is being offered would be new for network providers, for OEMs and also for the users.
