Police say missing marijuana eaten by mice

Three people have died and more than 100 people have suffered severe bleeding from smoking weed believed to be laced with rat poison.

"The number of cases continues to go up each day", said Melaney Arnold, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Public Health, according to The Associated Press.

Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made chemicals that are sprayed on plant materials that can be smoked, or sold as a liquid that can be consumed in an e-cigarette. But when police inspected the evidence warehouse sometime later, they found that 540 kilograms were missing. They are not regulated and people don't know what chemicals may be in them, like rat poison. That's more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana.

Synthetic cannabinoids can cause seizures, muscle damage, kidney damage, and psychosis. Earlier this month, three grocery store clerks in Chicago were arrested, and are now awaiting trial for selling the tainted pot.

The products were labeled with names like Matrix, Blue Giant, and Crazy Monkey, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Researchers from New York University surveyed emergency department patients at a diverse Manhattan hospital and found that of over 2,000 people admitted, at least 155 reported symptoms and behaviors consistent with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS).

"Preliminary testing of some of the cannabinoids purchased by the undercover officer revealed a detectable amount of brodifacoum, a toxic substance frequently used in rat poison", according to a statement from the federal agency. Those sickened require hospitalization and treatment with vitamin K to control bleeding, she said. The CDC has warned doctors nationwide to be on the lookout for patients experiencing severe and unexplained bleeding.

"This disturbing outbreak proves yet again the dangers of using synthetic marijuana", said State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker, M.D.
