A Woolworths spokeswoman told SBS News the temporary outage hit all its stores.

A woman named Rose, from Hoppers Crossing in Melbourne, told 3AW customers were offered lollies as they were asked to leave.

"We can confirm that an IT issue impacted registers in our supermarkets for a short period of time this afternoon", she said.


At Haymarket, in Sydney, staff shut the store and were turning people away, telling them to "come back in about an hour". "We apologise for any inconvenience caused".

The issue began affecting all registers across the country shortly after 4pm, leaving consumers with trolleys full of shopping but no way to pay.

Registers temporarily shut down at a number of Woolworths stores across the nation due to a major technical outage this afternoon.

Woolworths stores across the country have had to shut down registers and are unable to make sales.

The supermarket giant has not yet revealed the cause of the outage.
