March For Science' To Take Place Saturday In Downtown San Diego

People from the Grand Valley marched to defend and advocate for evidence-based science and it's role in society.

On April 22, last year, more than a million scientists, teachers and supporters of scientific thought marched in more than 600 cities around the world in a unique initiative to defend science and scientific outlook.

Saturday's crowds were notably smaller than those that showed up for the first march in April 2017, but attendees expressed as much optimism and hope as they did a year ago.

The largest "March for Science" took place in Washington, D.C.

"It's time for people to be aware of what's going on", said an attendee.

Lehigh University Assistant Professor Joshua Pepper said science is also hurt by attacks on immigrants and refugees because science is driven not just by homegrown scientists but also by foreigners who come to the U.S.to study and perform research.

"We need to speak up, or policy decisions will be made without scientific input", the toxicologist told CNN.

"There's no room for climate deniers", she said.

"Funding for science continues to remain abysmally low in India while all developed countries or those aspiring to reach that stage of development are, in keeping with requirements of the knowledge era, investing much higher proportions of GDP in S&T research", said a statement by the organisers. In the crowd as well as onstage, the message was mostly, "Listen to the scientists". Trump had established a long record of criticizing climate science and suggested it was a hoax perpetuated by the Chinese government, despite scientific evidence that contradicted those beliefs.
