Locals extend help to Rohingya refugees after fire destroys Delhi's only camp

A massive fire breaks out in Rohingya refugee camp near Delhi's Kalindi Kunj metro station colony on April 15 at around 3 am. It took three hours to doused it off, said a fire official.

The Rohingya are a mostly Muslim people fleeing persecution in western Myanmar.

About 230 people were staying in the camp.

One of the Rohingyas told ANI, "Everything we had been gutted in the fire". As the fire spread across the camp, eight more fire tenders were pressed into service. "One person sustained minor injuries", he said.

The fire broke out at the camp at 3am on Sunday when residents were deep in sleep and are not sure how it the camp caught fire.

The rescued refugees were provided temporary tent and mosquito nets to their spend time in the ground till their shanties are reconstructed. The camp, established in 2012 at Madanpur Khadar area of Kalindi Kunj, has seen four incidents of fire since - in 2012, 2016, 2017 and now in 2018.

According to police, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, however, preliminary investigations point to an office building located next to the JJ slum camp where the fire could have started, which soon spread all over the camp.

Locals claimed the camp, housing nearly 100 women and 50 children, doesn't have sufficient firefighting equipment despite this being the fourth fire in the six years since the camp came into existence.
