Ian Somerhalder To Star in Netflix's Vampire Drama 'V-Wars'

Based on the IDW comic of the same name by writer Jonathan Maberry, V-Wars follows the adventures of Dr. Luther Swann (Somerhalder) as he tries to understand the nature of the disease that has transformed his best friend Michael Fayne and so many others into vampires. As this disease spreads and more people are turned into murderous predators, social structures fracture and an "us against them" mentality pits humans against vampires. Unfortunately for him, Michael rises to power as an underground leader of the vampires, putting Swann in a hard spot. Netflix has ordered 10 hourlong episodes of V-Wars, based on Jonathan Maberry's bestselling book, from IDW Entertainment and High Park Entertainment.

Brad Turner (Human Cargo, 24, Stargate and Stargate Atlantis) will direct the pilot episode and executive produce.

V-Wars does not yet have a premiere date, but we'll keep you updated as the production continues. William Laurin and Glenn Davis will serve as showrunners. IDW entertainment and High Park Entertainment will produce, with IDW distributing worldwide (except Canada). That company, as well as the drama's original writer and producers Circle of Confusion are no longer attached. Despite multiple attempts to bring the series to both the big and small screen, IDW remains committed to finding the project a creative home.

The role marks Somerhalder's latest major role in a vampire drama. He and his Rare Birds Productions are now under a pod deal at Warner Bros. He previously starred in The CW's series adaptation of "The Vampire Diaries" as Damon Salvatore. He is repped by ICM Partners, Untitled Entertainment and Todd Rubenstein of Morris Yorn.

There is now no expected release date for V-Wars, but it's highly likely that Netflix will release the entire first season at once, as the company does with most of its original programming. The genre remains popular with NBC's Midnight, Texas, and Syfy's Van Helsing, among others.
