France's Macron says he convinced Trump to keep troops in Syria

French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday said he had convinced US President Donald Trump to keep troops in Syria, as he defended joint air strikes he said were legitimate and allowed France and allies to regain credibility.

"Ten days ago president Trump wanted the United States of America to withdraw from Syria". The NATO alliance gave its full backing; NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in Brussels that the attack was about ensuring that chemical weapons can not be used with impunity.

Satellite images of the facilities, located west of Homs and near the capital Damascus, before and after the strikes appear to show they suffered extensive damage.

The French president also said he had told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow is complicit in the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria. however, he said that Paris considers a dialogue with Russia, Turkey, and Iran on Syria to be a necessary part of the settlement.

Pointing to the overnight strike, another advisor to Macron said: "This is proof today that the political line he drew at the start of his mandate was meant to be respected".

"All of our missiles reached their target", he said.

"I ordered the French armed forces to intervene as part of an global operation in coalition with the United States and the United Kingdom directed against the clandestine chemical arsenal of the Syrian regime". Images taken in the immediate aftermath of the April 7 attack show babies, children and adults, lying on the ground, some foaming at the mouth.

The French leader claimed that he was responsible for convincing Donald Trump to "stay" in Syria.

"There has been repeated and proven violations of the treaty", he said.

"It was retaliation, not an act of war", Macron said in justifying the operation a day before the French parliament was set to debate it.

While Trump declared success, the Pentagon said the pummeling of three chemical-related facilities left enough others intact to enable the Assad government to use banned weapons against civilians if it chooses. Politicians in France and the United Kingdom will on Monday seek answers from the countries' leaders about their decision to launch strikes without formal approval.

However, he said that Russian Federation had made itself complicit in the Syrian regime's actions.

He said the military operation in Syria was legitimate and within the global community framework, and was not a declaration of war.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in response: "The U.S. mission has not changed - the president has been clear that he wants U.S. forces to come home as quickly as possible".

She added that Washington was "determined to completely crush" the Islamic State group in the country "and create the conditions that will prevent its return".

President Trump said on his official Twitter following the attack it had been a "perfectly executed strike".
