Facebook Sought Access to Medical Records to Target Pharma Ads

Facebook Sought Access to Medical Records to Target Pharma Ads

The change in stance, announced in a Facebook post by Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, comes a few days before he is scheduled to answer questions in congressional hearings about how the company handles its users data.

Facebook first acknowledged last month that personal information about millions of users wrongly ended up in the hands of Cambridge Analytica. But the dream-for the moment-is no more.

Facebook said in a statement that keeping messages private is its priority, but it also defended the automated tools as being "very similar to those that other internet companies use today".

Facebook officials will be travelling - or at least making phone calls - to Europe to respond to concerns that the data of as many as 2.7 million people in the European Union might have been shared with a consulting firm that worked on Donald Trump's U.S. presidential campaign.

Gillmor explained, "I received an email from Facebook that lists the people who have all invited me to join Facebook: my aunt, an old co-worker, a friend from elementary school, etc".

On Wednesday, Facebook admitted it had "improperly shared" the personal data of tens of millions more users than previously estimated, putting the new number at 87 million users - an increase of more than 30 million. After an ominous period of silence, Zuckerberg apologized and later agreed to testify on April 11.

But is advertising really the only way to make Facebook work? It would have to hustle, like Apple, Amazon and Netflix do, to make us think it's valuable.

The feature was announced after it was revealed that the company had deleted Mark Zuckerberg's messages sent on Messenger. When Facebook began to retract messages that Zuckerberg had sent, it made no public disclosure of what it was doing.

No doubt investors would be unhappy if Facebook became a subscription business: its main upside would be adding new members, and Facebook is starting to run out of humans.

The company's moderators can review any messages that are flagged by users or the automated systems.

In Canada, we've been testing a new feature called view ads that lets you see the ads a Page is running - even if they are not in your News Feed.

The Canadian federal agency charged with protecting privacy rights of individuals said on Thursday that the agency, along with its counterpart in British Columbia, would jointly investigate Facebook and AggregateIQ over the ongoing data scandal. This is an attempt to weed out fake accounts from controlling popular pages, something that goes against Facebook's terms of service.

In remarks to Sky TG24, chairman Giovanni Pitruzzella said the main focus of the case will be on the misleading message the social-media company passes on to its users.

What this boils down to is Facebook tampering with the inboxes of its users, without notifying them.

Global News has reached out to AIQ for comment, but in a previous statement the company said it has worked "in full compliance within all legal and regulatory requirements in all jurisdictions where we operate". While the practice might sound good in theory, some users took issue with it at a time when Facebook's ability to uphold privacy is under scrutiny.

In response, six organizations in Myanmar signed a letter to Zuckerberg rejecting the CEO's claim.

In addition, Facebook says it will also require the administrators of pages with a "large number" of followers to verify their identities and addresses.
