Facebook adds fuel to privacy row: We track non-users, says Zuckerberg

The compensation costs include the security provided at Zuckerberg's home and during travel and the expense incurred from his private air travel. "To do it well, and this is just on Facebook, it's probably an hourlong-plus project". (I couldn't figure out how to do the latter, and I write about technology for a living.) Zuckerberg says he's giving users control, but he's giving them the illusion of control.

The founder of social networking giant continued to earn a base salary of $1 with no bonuses or stock awards.

Over the past few months, Facebook has continued to be in the media due to a recent data hack as well as evidence that some consulting companies had been using user data for purposes that were not previously disclosed. The incident wiped off billions from Zuckerberg's wealth while Facebook's stock prices slumped in a week. Helena was chosen in part after Facebook conducted a study that found 39 percent of small businesses in Helena saw Facebook as an essential tool and 37 percent said it's helped them have the means to hire additional employees.

But Congress doesn't understand the problem - or the power - of Facebook any more than most of the rest of us do. I think it highly improbable that he is in business just because of money and, therefore, is very unlikely to have deliberately and knowingly encouraged or supported the mismanagement of Facebook users personal data for mere profit, including his own.

Technically, Facebook's users can turn off targeted advertisements or disable sensitive features such as image recognition in photos. Last summer, during the run-up of the post-Trump election hysteria, I noticed Facebook deleted my "live" sessions whenever I was more critical of the government, so I had to tone down my discussion of criminal endeavors the agency engages in regularly.

"We don't acquire data from Facebook [unlike Cambridge Analytica] so these changes won't have any impact on our business", TargetSmart CEO Tom Bonier told The Post, asked about the elimination of the Partner Categories program. Facebook also had my entire phone book, including the number to ring my apartment buzzer. And for some reason, people are surprised that their information is being used by advertising and political firms. There was one ad category they had, which was a person who likes to pretend to text in awkward situations. The questions posed by the senators, both Democrats and Republicans, focused on the security of the social media platform and how best users could protect their privacy.

The 2011 consent decree capped years of Facebook privacy mishaps, many of which revolved around its early attempts to follow users and their friends around the web. It's apparent Facebook's culture is one that doesn't trust its own value statements and suffers from low morale.

You know, these are the kinds of things they'd like to know about you because they're hoping some advertiser will want to buy that ad category. We should reflect upon the many viruses created just to harm Microsoft and other software; operating systems are always being hijacked by those whose only goal remains destruction and exploitation.

But the questioning from members of Congress, most of whom are old enough to be the 33-year-old Zuckerberg's grandparents, was excruciating to watch. In case it was designated a "media" company, FB would face strict advertising regulations governing television, print and digital media. To the extent that Facebook is only a platform, it can be easily replaced by others. Zuckerberg would not admit he feels like a monopoly, but he couldn't name a true competitor.

In my view as a scholar of law and ethics in the technology industry, Facebook - and other leading tech firms such as Google and Twitter - should join nations around the world and declare that privacy and cybersecurity are human rights that must be respected.
