Apple Memo Warning Leakers Against Leaking Leaks

In an internal memo to employees, Apple threatened severe consequences for leaking confidential company information - reminding staff that those who leak can lose their jobs, have hard finding future employment, and even get arrested.

Last month, Apple caught and fired the employee responsible for leaking details from an internal, confidential meeting about Apple's software roadmap. "One person betrayed their trust", the company reportedly wrote on its internal blog.

There were leaks past year that Apple was planning a third color for iPhone X, but the company ended up launching the device in just two (Space Gray and Silver). A scoop about an unreleased Apple product can generate massive traffic for a publication and financially benefit the blogger or reporter who broke it.

While Apple made no public comment about that, leaks suggested the initial intent had indeed been to have three iPhone X finishes, not two. "Among those were Apple employees, contractors and some partners in Apple's supply chain". The memo added: "These people not only lose their jobs, they can face extreme difficulty finding employment elsewhere".

Analysts believe that "once Apple establishes a price band it typically keeps it", which is consistent with what they have heard from former Apple employees.

With the 6.1-inch LCD model priced in the $700-$800 range, that gives Apple a bit of wiggle room with regards to pricing the more premium iPhone X. Perhaps Apple's reasoning here is that users who are looking for best Apple has to offer are willing to pay a few hundred more dollars for an OLED display and perhaps faster internals. Given their size and the number of contractors they work with, occasional leaks are bound to come out. The success of these outsiders is measured by obtaining Apple's secrets from you and making them public.

The memo then goes on to stress how damaging leaks are to the company itself, those who worked on a project, and other employees. In 2017, Apple caught 29 leakers. 12 of them were arrested.

Apple warned its employees that leaking details about the latest iPhone could land them in jail. "The potential criminal consequences of leaking are real", says Tom Moyer of Global Security, "and that can become part of your personal and professional identity forever".

They threw all kinds of claims against me, I had a good lawyer that completely understood the problem, did good research, and read the law correctly.
