American woman dominates the 2018 Boston Marathon

Linden, 34, who lives in MI, finished second in Boston back in 2011.

She won the race by running in 2 hours, 39 minutes and 54 seconds. While he is a seasoned runner with more than 80 marathon finishes in his career, Monday's time in Boston adds to his record number of 2:20-and-under marathon finishes.

"For me, it's the best conditions possible", Kawauchi said with a wide smile through an interpreter.

Flanagan was even quoted to have said she wanted to win the 2018 Boston marathon "so badly" that she had to resort to reverse psychology in order to maintain focus. The U.S. elite runner finished the marathon in 2:46:31, the Washington Post reports.

In 2011, Linden finished second at Boston by just two seconds.

Hometown favorite Shalane Flanagan, a four-time Olympian and the reigning New York City Marathon champion, finished sixth after popping into a course-side portable toilet before the halfway point and falling behind the lead pack.

Desiree Linden became the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years Monday, ending a long USA drought on a rain-soaked day.

When the national anthem played after she won, Linden said she mentally replayed the scenario when she was just six miles in. American Shadrack Biwott was third.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland notched his fifth win in the men's wheelchair division, while American woman Tatyana McFadden also won her fifth title.

Before Linden, the last American woman to win the Boston Marathon was Lisa Rainsberger in 1985.

This was the slowest time for a women's victor since 1978.

At the end of the day, American men managed to snatch six of the Top 10 positions, with Andrew Bumbalough (2:19:52) coming in fifth, Scott Smith (2:21:47) finishing sixth, Elkanah Kibet (2:23:37) ranking eighth, and Daniel Vassallo (2:27:50) finishing last in the Top 10.
