Wholesale inflation eases to 7-month low of 2.48% in February

Annual wholesale price inflation last month slowed to 2.48 per cent, lower than the 2.84 per cent recorded in January, 2018, and 5.51 per cent recorded in the corresponding month previous year, according to data released by the commerce ministry on Wednesday.

Wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation was at 2.84 per cent in January 2018 and was at 5.52 per cent in February previous year.

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices showed no variations in February.

Wholesale food prices in February rose 0.07% year-on-year, compared with a 1.65% rise a month earlier, the data showed.

However, prices of vegetables continued on an upward trend, rising 15.26 per cent, though slowing down from a 40.77 per cent rise in January.

While the rate of price rise in onion slowed, it increased in the case of another kitchen essential, potato. Prices of pulses, meanwhile, have fallen by almost 25 per cent and of wheat by 6.23 per cent during the same period.

WPI inflation at 2.48% in February is the lowest in seven months. WPI inflation in protein rich items like egg, fish and meat too was in the negative zone.

Wholesale inflation rose 3.81% in fuel and power and 3.04% in manufactured items compared with 4.08% and 2.78%, respectively.

The latest inflation was in line with a 2.50% increase forecast by economists in a Reuters poll.

Similarly, CARE Ratings also said while food prices will remain stable in the coming months, inflationary threats could arise from increase in global oil or commodity prices, unseasonal weather patterns and increase in Minimum Support Prices for some crops.

However, expenses on manufactured products in the month under review registered a rise of 3.04 per cent, from 2.78 per cent in January.
