Tour bus falls off ravine on I-10, multiple helicopters respond

A charter bus carrying more than 50 Texas high school students home from a trip to Disney World plunged into an Alabama ravine early Tuesday morning, leaving more than a dozen injured, local authorities said.

An Alabama state trooper said the bus driver died at the scene on Interstate 10 close to the to the Florida state line.

A spokesman for Channelview ISD confirmed that the bus was chartered by the district and was bringing students home from a trip to Disney World.

"We have multiple injuries; the bus went down into a ravine", said Chris Elliott, a Baldwin County commissioner who helped out at the county emergency management center following the crash.

The Alabama Department of Transportation announced that eastbound traffic on I-10 was being diverted at Exit 44.

Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola confirmed on its website that it had received 18 patients from the bus wreck on Tuesday.

Authorities said I-10 will remain closed near the town of Loxley, Ala., until about noon CT on Tuesday as the investigation and cleanup continues.

The bus was operated by the First Class Tours charter company out of Houston.
