Tempe Police: fatal accident involving pedestrian and self-driving vehicle

The company said it was was "fully cooperating" with the authorities in Arizona after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a driverless Uber vehicle.

A self-driving auto from Uber Technologies Inc. hit and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona, on Sunday evening, what is likely the first pedestrian fatality involving a driverless vehicle.

The victim was crossing the road outside of the crosswalk when she was hit. She was later taken to hospital, as first reported by local Arizona ABC news affiliate ABC 15, where she died as a result of her injuries.


Uber has been testing the self-driving vehicles in Tempe and Phoenix for months.

Uber confirms that the vehicle was traveling in autonomous mode with a safety driver behind the wheel during the crash. Uber says that it is working with the the local authorities.
