Serena vs Venus, tennis' greatest sibling rivalry resumes at Indian Wells

However, in the time when play was possible Spaniard Fernando Verdasco used his powerful serve to upset third seed Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3.

It is Serena that holds the better of the head-to-head between the siblings, with 17 wins to her name compared to Venus' 11.

If you think these two enjoy playing each other, think again. In the build-up to the game, Serena stated as much.

After her second round win over Kiki Bertens, Serena said she "would prefer to play someone else, anybody else, literally anybody else, but it has to happen now".

Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion and eight-time victor on Key Biscayne, is back on tour after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia on September 1, 2017.

While her business experience includes several endorsement deals through brands like Nike and Gatorade, she also serves as a minority owner of the Miami Dolphins alongside her tennis-playing sister, Venus Williams.

Serena chose to return in 2015, whilst Venus came back to Indian Wells in 2016.

Serena is returning to the tour after more than a year away after pregnancy and childbirth. Serena won that, claiming her history-making 23rd Grand Slam win.

It will be their 29th match against each other, but first ever at the BNP Paribas Open.

The sisters were due to play each other in the semi-finals of the 2001 edition of the tournament, however, Venus pulled out with injury just four minutes before the match. It's against this opponent that Serena has had some career-defining moments.

The match is scheduled to start around 10 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on the Tennis Channel. In other matches, fifth seed Dominic Thiem beat Greek 19-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 while South African seventh seed Kevin Anderson overcame Russian Evgeny Donskoy 7-5, 6-4.

The Williams family believed their treatment was racially motivated.

Serena, unseeded in the wake of her long layoff, admitted she would have preferred not to come up against her sister so soon in the draw.
