Daniel, ranked 109 in the world, claimed the biggest win of his career as the qualifier prevailed 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-1. In the next round he faces Jeremy Chardy who beat fellow Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.

Daniel came back from a break down to take the first set in a tiebreak, and he limited mistakes in the third to secure the upset. He started quickly hammering a backhand victor to take the lone break of the first set and he would deny a pair of break chances when serving for the opener at 5-3.

There were no such problems for Kevin Anderson or Tomas Berdych, who were straight-sets winners over Evgeny Donskoy and Max Marterer respectively, while Dominic Thiem saw off Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Marin Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion who lost to Federer in the final of this year's Australian Open, eased to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Marton Fucsovics.

However, world number 97 Sela dug deep to hold serve and immediately broke Edmund to get back on level terms before another break in the 10th game secured the set. "And even though you don't have pain, you are still thinking about it, because it has been something that I have been feeling and dragging for over two years", Djokovic said.

Andy Murray hasn't played in a competitive match since Wimbledon a year ago and is still recovering from hip surgery.

The 12-time Grand Slam champion was playing his first competitive match since recovery from a wrist injury that hampered his Australian Open campaign in January 2018.

He added, "Very weird". Also have a Foundation trip I'm doing at that time, so I'm planning that a little bit.

Djokovic had four aces but served poorly overall, finishing with four double faults, and the Serbian made 62 unforced errors in total.

Novak Djokovic struggled during his second-round match against Taro Daniel.

"I actually was explosive out there today and I felt good", he said. "Filip's wasn't so good and then things go quickly", Federer told Sky Sports in a post-match interview. The win sets up a third round showdown with Spaniard David Ferrer who defeated Tennys Sandgren of the USA 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).
