Police involved in standoff near Princeton University

According to the Princeton University website, Henry House and Scheide-Caldwell, the two campus buildings closest to the Panera restaurant, have been evacuated.

Authorities in New Jersey say an armed man has been holed up in a restaurant across the street from Princeton University's campus.

It was not immediately clear if there are hostages inside the restaurant. Nassau Street is closed between Witherspoon Street and Washington Road.

Authorities did not release the ID of the deceased gunman. During the interview, the gunman could be heard over the police scanner saying "no one is coming through those doors".

The university sent out an alert to students and faculty.

"No shots were fired; there is no shelter-in-place order", Princeton University wrote shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Classes are not in session, as this is the week of spring break.

"We are in touch with the police and will lift the shelter in place when the situation is resolved", said Superintendent of Schools Stephen Cochrane. Several police officers on Nassau Street have guns drawn.

"I ran outside to get some of the people who came to look behind the perimeter", Morrison said. "They were putting up the perimeter pretty fast".
