Pakistan, Iran to strengthen ties: Maleeha

'Iran is a very important neighbor of Pakistan, and Pakistan and Iran have always enjoyed very good relations; and we are trying now to strengthen that relationship through [not only] trade [and] economic relationship but also at the political leadership level, ' Maleeha Lodhi told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

Pakistan on Tuesday accused India of intimidating and harassing its diplomat's children while they were on their way to school. The move would likely put pressure on the Pakistani policy making apparatus, since it would have to weigh involvement in a project that would make it part of a corridor that undercuts its geographical advantage and offers to cut down on India's strategic advantage, against the setback it could deal to its own ambitions over the nearby Gwadar Port.

He compared Iran's relations with India to Pakistan's ties with Saudi Arabia. On the other hand, Pakistan issued a demarche to India saying it was becoming hard for its diplomats to function in Delhi.

On another thorny issue for India, Iran's Foreign minister Javad Zarif, on a three-day visit to Islamabad, also supported the right of self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

As part of his engagement during the three-day visit, the Iranian foreign minister held meetings with prominent businessmen of Pakistan on Tuesday and highlighted the economic potential of Iran and the opportunities for joint ventures with other countries.

Besides all the bilateral issues, regional security situation was also discussed at length. In November 2017, India delievered the first consignment of wheat to Afghanistan through the Chabahar Port. After years of trying to make the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline a reality, Iran and India had given up on Pakistan. The port opened a new strategic transit route between India, Iran and Afghanistan that bypassed Pakistan. These regions need to be linked by sea and land routes, he said. The visiting Foreign Minister is being accompanied by a large trade delegation from Iran.
