But while his global future remains up in the air, his club situation has been clarified after agreeing fresh terms with Dortmund which will keep him at the club until 2023.

The 28-year-old joined Dortmund from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012 for a deal worth €17 million and has since scored 92 goals in 194 games.

The German international's contract was due to expire in 2019. Since I was a child I dreamt of wearing black and yellow and to play for this club.

"This renewal is a "thank you" to our fantastic fans, who have always stood by me".

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, who was sitting alongside Marco Reus, at the presser, said, "Marco improves any team. The club has supported me in tough times, so it was important for me to thank them", Reus continued.

"We're really pleased Marco has made a decision to sign a long-term contract with the club despite numerous offers from around the world", said BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. The discussions with Marco and his advisor were constructive and harmonious right from the beginning. "This player shows the maximum of dedication and we are proud of that", added Zorc.

One of Reus' first tasks after extending his stay at Dortmund is to salvage a spot in the Europa League quarter-finals next week after he and his side went down 2-1 to RB Salzburg at home on Thursday evening.
