Kirk Cousins will reportedly sign three-year deal with the Vikings

The league's hottest free agent appears to have chosen his landing spot.

The deal for Cousins, 29, is set to be fully guaranteed and worth in the region of $84million to $86m, with the annual average of at least $28m making him the highest-paid player in National Football League history. That's an average of $28 million per year, $500,000 per year more than Jimmy Garoppolo will earn per year. The two have stockpiled picks over the last week, meaning they will try to rise in the draft.

Vikings quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford, like Keenum, are free agents.

Nothing is official, however, and it's still possible that Cousins could leave his visit to Minnesota Wednesday without a deal. As such, they did not franchise him and Keenum is expected to sign with the Broncos.

Stafford will only become a free agent before the end of his deal if he hasn't lived up to the price tag.

Ponder, who started the first games of the 2012 and 2013 seasons, remains the most recent Vikings quarterback to hold the job after the preseason for two consecutive years. Despite ranking fourth in passing yards, sixth in passer rating, and eighth in touchdown passes during three years as Washington's starter, from 2015 to 2018, he never signed a long term contract with the team. Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs return for another season in which they'll vie to be the NFL's top receiving duo.

The contract is the main sticking point among Vikings fans.

No matter how Cousins performs in Minnesota, he'll make all of that $86 million.

In the NFC North - and really, close to the entire NFL - Rodgers has been the golden standard for quarterback play. With an estimated $100 million in cap space this offseason, the Jets were willing to give Cousins a contract in which he would be given $60 million in his first year alone. He will not be last. But the Redskins missed the playoffs by losing their regular-season finale at home to the New York Giants. It is likely a couple will be elsewhere by 2020.

If negotiations hit a snag, there would be no clear backup plan in place for the Vikings.

Not only did Cousins sign with the right team, he will instantly be the shot caller for a super bowl contender. The future is secondary.
