Jared Kushner Travels to Mexico for Meeting With President Enrique Peña Nieto

Kushner, a senior adviser and son-in-law to President Donald Trump, will discuss security, immigration and trade issues, a senior USA administration official confirmed to CNBC.

Kushner has seen an increase in unwanted attention over the past few weeks after a series of embarrassments. They will meet with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and will have a working meeting with Secretary of Foreign Relations Luis Videgaray.

Kushner's clearance downgrade reportedly came about as result of a personnell review undertaken at the request of White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.

With his relationship to Trump and close ties to Videgaray and, by extension, Peña Nieto, Kushner has loomed large over US-Mexico relations, which have been thrown into tumult by Trump's rhetoric and policy positions. Kushner will be joined in the USA delegation by officials with the National Security Council and State Department. Kushner's background investigation stretched 15 months while officials examine significant issues in his application, sources have told ABC News.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry added that the embattled senior adviser - who was recently stripped of White House high-level security clearance - will be "accompanied by officials from the State Department and the National Security Council of the United States", for the Mexico City discussions.

Nieto also canceled a planned trip to Washington, DC, in March after Trump refused to say publicly that Mexico would not have to fund his proposed wall on the southern border.

"The two leaders mutually agree now was not the immediate right time for a visit, but that they would not their teams continue to talk and work together", the official told ABC News.

Sputnik reported that White House sources said Trump, in the telephone exchange, had insisted that the Latin American country should pay for his campaign-promised wall to keep out undocumented immigrants. In Trump's campaign announcement two years ago he singled out Mexicans crossing the US border, saying they're "bringing crime", "bringing drugs" and are "rapists".

The meeting comes a little more than a week after Peña Nieto scrapped plans to meet with Trump in the U.S., reportedly because Trump would not assure the Mexican president he wouldn't discuss his insistence that Mexico pay for his proposed border wall. Trump himself said on Wednesday that if the United States was able to "make a deal with Canada and Mexico in NAFTA, then there will be no reason to do the tariffs with Canada and Mexico".
