Iran gears up for rescue following deadly airplane crash

Iranian rescue teams have reached the site of Sunday's plane crash that killed 66 people, Iran's Press TV reported.

The Red Crescent said 45 teams had been deployed to the Dena mountain of Iran's southwestern Zagros range, but there was still no sign of any wreckage.

The crashed plane was 25 years old, Iran's civil aviation organisation said.

ATR-72 planes were developed and produced in France and Italy. An Aseman Airlines spokesperson confirmed that the airline had been unable to reach the presumed crash site to confirm whether all on board had died.

Authorities said that rescue helicopters struggled to land in the crash site in the Zagros Mountain because of 'heavy fog and emergency workers were trying to reach the area by land'.

Aseman Airline initially said everyone had been killed, but said later: "Given the special circumstances of the region, we still have no access to the spot of the crash and therefore we can not accurately and definitely confirm the death of all passengers of this plane". Anxious relatives of passengers had gathered at Yasuj airport.

"I can't bring myself to believe it", said one woman whose husband was on board.

One man told Tabnak news website that he had missed the flight.

Aseman's fleet includes at least three ATR-72s that date back to the early 1990s, according to the IRNA news agency.

Its nuclear accord with world powers allows it to get those parts and the country has made deals worth tens of billions of dollars for new aircraft.

"I take this opportunity to send condolences to the families of the 66 civilians that lost their lives", Netanyahu said at the Munich Security Conference.

Decades of global sanctions have left Irans airlines with ageing fleets of passenger planes which they have struggled to maintain and modernise. However, President Donald Trump's refusal to recertify the deal has injected uncertainty into those sales while Iranians still fly in aging aircraft.

Aseman, Iran's third largest airline, signed a contract with Boeing past year to buy 30 of its latest medium-range 737s.

"We have no quarrel with the people of Iran, only with the regime that torments them", he added.

The US Treasury Department, which must approve each such sale, has done so for 80 Boeing jets destined for national carrier Iran Air as well as 100 Airbus planes for Iran Air.
