Indian Wells Masters: Roger Federer beats Federico Delbonis to enter next round

As his form began to dip at the end of 2016, Djokovic admitted that he had been affected by off-court issues that he hasn't elaborated on.

Five-time champion Djokovic suffered a shock second-round loss to Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel, who sent the out-of-sorts Serb tumbling with a hard-fought win at the BNP Paribas Open. "He is undoubtedly one of the greatest players ever so it was a great privilege", said the Zimbabwean, who idolises the Serbian star. "I mean, I just completely lost rhythm, everything". The 10th seed was appearing in his second tournament of the year (Round of 16 at the Australian Open) after undergoing a "small medical intervention" on his right elbow last month.

He had elbow surgery in Switzerland shortly after that.

"I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly but at the same time just didn't feel good at all", he added. His backhand, traditionally his most consistent and game-breaking weapon, bled errors-32 in all. "That is as head scratching as anything you'll see".

Federer's second-round match-up with Delbonis was delayed in the second set on Saturday due to rain, and the Swiss was intrigued by the opportunity to take on the same opponent for the second day running as he triumphed 6-3 7-6 (8-6).

Federer, who earned his fifth title at Indian Wells a year ago, saved a set point in the second-set tiebreaker and advanced to face Filip Krajinovic on Monday.

"It's been a long time since I have been interrupted at night and have to come back the next day", Federer said. "The surface doesn't react so much; the ball doesn't travel so fast".

Daniel, who is ranked 109th in the world, advanced to the third round where he will face Gael Monfils of France. In a stunning performance, the 110th ranked Yuki, who qualified for the main draw, dispatched the ninth seed Frenchman 6-4, 6-4 79 minutes.

Israeli Dudi Sela beat British 21st seed Edmund 6-4, 6-4, while Luxemburg's 24th seed Giles Muller was upset by Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3, 7-5.

The 36-year-old became the oldest man ever the honour and he is now looking to defend the title at the Indian Wells.

Djokovic had four aces but overall he served poorly making four double faults and winning just 65 per cent of his first-serve points.
