Flake calls for Trump to face 2020 primary challenge

Days before he travels to the state that holds the first presidential primary, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), have argued that they are at risk of becoming "normalized". It would be a tough go in a Republican primary. Trump praised Saccone as an "extraordinary person" who should "win easily", but most of the president's rambling campaign address focused on his own agenda, enemies, and entertainment value.

But Flake says "that's not to say it will stay that way". "If I came like a stiff, you guys wouldn't be here tonight", he said, launching into an impression of himself as a boring president who does boring things, like expressing respect for the military or saying "God bless you".

He fueled speculation about his presidential ambitions by announcing that he would appear at next week's New Hampshire Institute of Politics event, "Politics & Eggs".

He is retiring from the Senate and has not ruled out a run for president.

On Sunday, Flake conceded that his views are out of sync with the GOP.

Flake has been a relentless GOP critic of Trump.

"I understand free trade is sometimes a challenge". This year, he has given Senate floor speeches denouncing the president's attacks on the media and antagonism toward Democrats.

On the tariffs, Flake said Trump had introduced "dual poisons" for the economy, by erecting new trade barriers and then introducing uncertainty by suggesting he might make some exceptions for certain countries. But Democrats have struck a more measured tone, as many members of the party's progressive wing have always been critical of free trade agreements they believe harm United States workers. "I think we're going completely the wrong direction, " he said. "And so we need to trade".

Todd asked him if other Republicans should join him in condemning Trump's behavior.

But Flake maintained that tariffs will make things worse, not better, for Americans and the US economy.
