Explosion targets Palestinian PM's convoy while visiting Gaza

Hamas condemned the explosion targeting Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Hamdallah's convoy in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday morning.

Hamdallah arrived in the blockaded strip for a short visit on Tuesday, accompanied by intelligence chief Majd Faraj.

Mr Hamdallah's ruling Fatah party quickly held Hamas responsible for the "cowardly attack" on the convoy, further escalating tensions between the bitter rival factions.

The incident took place amid heightened tensions between the main Palestinian factions over the implementation of a reconciliation deal signed a year ago.

"The prime minister was unhurt in the attack", Wafa said. Gunfire was reported shortly after the explosion.

Hamas-run Interior Ministry's spokesperson Iyad Al-Bozom said the convoy went on to reach its destination safely after the explosion and an investigation had been launched into the incident.

Greenblatt reportedly said that the conference will focus on ideas to enhance the Gaza Strip's economy and living conditions, and urged Islamic Hamas movement running the coastal enclave since 2007 to give up armed resistance and commit to peace negotiations.

"The attack against the government of consensus is an attack against the unity of the Palestinian people", said Nabil Abu Rdainah, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The top Palestinian Authority officials made the rare trip from the West Bank for the inauguration of a desalination plant.

He was also met with senior Hamas officials to discuss reconciliation talks between Hamas and the PA.
