Everton fans beg Southampton to take Allardyce after Pellegrino sacking

Pellegrino, who took over from Frenchman Claude Puel in June,"parted company" with Southampton on Monday after a 3-0 loss to Newcastle United at the weekend left them with just one win in their last 17 Premier League games.

Former Watford boss Marco Silva instantly emerged as the frontrunner to succeed the Argentine on Monday night.

Hughes has taken charge of almost 450 Premier League matches for Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR and Stoke.

The 46-year-old Pellegrino joined on a three-year deal in June last year, weeks after leaving Spanish team Alaves.

The former England boss is THE anti relegation specialist, becoming the firefighter to extinguish all relegation threatened Premier League blazes, having never been previously relegated in his career. The Portuguese coach is available, having lost his job back in January, but will no doubt be conscious of a second successive Premier League relegation, having suffered the dreaded drop with Hull last season.

The team, who are now one point outside the relegation zone, have taken on the form of their coach in recent months in that they've become nearly entirely anonymous, with no recognisable approach or identity to speak of.

If Southampton are prepared to wait until the summer in their search for a new long-term manager they would no doubt boost their chances of luring over a boss who is now in employment.

Southampton are hoping to make a quick appointment in time for their FA Cup clash with Wigan on Sunday.

Southampton has 29 goals in 30 games, winning only five of them.

Southampton, who are the ninth Premier League club to change manager this term, are in their sixth straight season in the top flight and have not finished lower than 14th in that time.
