Eagles release TE Brent Celek, their longest-tenured player

With Philadelphia needing to free up cash to get under the cap by Wednesday's deadline, Celek was sacrificed in order to accomplish that goal.

The Eagles' defensive line, as it stood Tuesday afternoon (in the fast changing National Football League offseason environment) is an absolute terror.

However, when it comes to the team parting ways with their longest-tenured player in tight end Brent Celek, it's safe to say this was the decision that hurts the most for fans. But his production has waned in recent seasons and the Eagles will save $4 million in salary cap space by releasing him. After being drafted in 2007, Celek would never play for another team besides the Eagles in his lengthy career. Pro Football Focus (via Bleeding Green Nation's Brandon Lee Gowton) ranked Celek just 57th out of 69 qualifying tight ends as a run blocker for the 2017 season. He had 398 catches for 4,998 yards and 31 touchdowns. He missed just one regular-season game during his time with the Eagles, and that was because he couldn't pass concussion protocol on a short week in 2012. His dedication to his profession and this organization is unmatched and he will go down as one of the best tight ends in franchise history.

Numerous players who battled alongside Celek in 2017 to win Super Bowl LII shared glowing thoughts about their now former teammate. A few teams are off the market for quarterbacks, as Drew Brees signed a two-year, $50 million deal with New Orleans, Case Keenum reportedly agreed to play for the Broncos, and Kirk Cousins agreed to a likely three-year, $84 million deal with Minnesota.
