Body found at landfill

The Negishi family released a statement Wednesday that said Negishi appeared to be searching for help when deputies found him, and may have been "suffering from an acute state of confusion and shock".

Chicago: A Japanese Nobel Prize-winner was hospitalized Wednesday and his wife was dead, reportedly after driving off a road in rural IL.

It was then police learned the man and his wife were reported missing Monday out of West Lafayette, Ind.

The Ogle County Deputies were able to locate the auto, and Sumire, in the nearby Orchard Hills Landfill. His wife, Sumire Negishi, was also missing.

A post-mortem was pending on the body of Sumire Negishi but foul play was not suspected in her death, the sheriff's department said.

U.S. media reports say Japanese Nobel chemistry laureate Eiichi Negishi was in a vehicle accident in the state of IL. Local law enforcement agencies are now leading the investigation. Several members of Purdue's chemistry department declined comment. Eiichi was reportedly dehydrated and confused when he was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Ei-ichi, a researcher at Purdue for more than three decades, received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2010 for his work on palladium-catalyzed cross couplings in organic synthesis.
