Australian billionaire James Packer quits Crown Resorts due to mental health issues

Australian tycoon James Packer on Wednesday (March 21) quit as director of his gaming empire Crown Resorts as he battles "mental health issues", stepping back from all commitments, his company said.

Mr Alexander said Crown appreciated Mr Packer's contribution to the board and respected his decision to step down.

Packer's private investment vehicle, Consolidated Press Holdings, also released a statement on the sudden resignation.

"At this time", the company said, "he intends to step back from all commitments".

The Packer-controlled Consolidated Press Holdings is Crown's largest shareholder, with a stake that stood at 47.2 per cent at the end of last month.

A stream of leaks from the investigation have appeared in local media, many concerning hospitality given by Packer - who seeks high-tech investments in Israel and owns a home in glitzy Caesarea - to Yair, both in Israel and the United States.

In an interview with The Australian newspaper in October, 2017, Mr Packer acknowledged that he had always been shy and that he had never liked the enormous amount of publicity that he attracted.

Packer, 50, rejoined the board of Crown in August having previously stepped down as chairman and director in 2015.

His resignation on Wednesday is the latest development in a turbulent period for Crown, which was rocked a year ago by the jailing and criminal convictions of more than a dozen of its employees in China for illegally promoting gambling.

"Most of it is negative".

He was caught up in a scandal involving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in February of this year.

Shares in Crown were 22.5 cents, or 1.7 per cent, lower at $12.85 at 1513 AEDT.

Packer had only returned to the board last year after previously stepping down to focus on worldwide interests.
