Ashraf Sehrai replaces Geelani as interim chairman of TeH

Geelani had cited health reasons as he offered to step down.

In a statement issued to KNS, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat spokesman said that Geelani while addressing the members of Shoora, said that "you are aware of the prevailing situation of the valley and hard times all pro-freedom camp is facing especially Tehreek-e-Hurriyat".

Geelani had led the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat since its inception in 2004, senior Hurriyat leader GA Gulzar said.

Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai was on Monday appointed the new chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, the separatist organisation found by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

"By merely holding a position without practical contribution is injustice not only with the post but the conscience as well". He was replaced by Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai.

"However, he continues to be the chairman of the Hurriyat Conference", Gulzar said according to the Hindustan Times.

In view of the restriction imposed by the state government on office-cum-residence of Geelani, the ceremony was humble attended by few other leaders of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Hurriyat (G).

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference split after a section put up a proxy candidate in the 2002 assembly elections.

The moderate separatist leader and cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is chairman of another faction of Hurriyat Conference.
