Valley woman suffering from rare disease, wakes with British accent

In 2016, Lisa Alamia, a Rosenberg woman started sounding British after waking up from jaw surgery.

Former beauty queen Michelle Myers, from Buckeye, Arizona now speaks with a London accent - despite having never left the United States.

FAS is extremely rare and usually appears as a outcome of a stroke, brain damage, and in Meyers' case, underlying medical issues. There have been three separate instances where she has gone to sleep with a crippling headache only to find herself speaking with a new accent.

When she woke up, much to her surprise, the woman discovered that she could no longer speak "normally" but using a British accent instead.

There's a medical reason for Meyers' problem - she's been diagnosed with a disorder called Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS). Her medical condition is real and rare.

Unlike many stroke or brain-injury victims, sufferers typically produce grammatically correct language, Sheila Blumstein, a Brown University linguist who has written extensively on FAS, told The Washington Post for a 2010 article about a Virginia woman who fell down a stairwell, rattled her brain and awoke speaking with a Russian-like accent.

Arizona resident, Michelle Myers, has a condition doctors have identified as Foreign Accent Syndrome.

It turns out Meyers suffers from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a disease that Ehlers-Danlos Support UK defines as "a group of thirteen individual genetic conditions, all of which affect the body's connective tissue".

In Myers's case, the symptom was a severe headache.

All of the sudden, Myers said she had an Irish accent.

It was proven that Myers is not insane nor is she faking her changing accents. "I'm certainly not the first person with [FAS]".

"It was a joke in my family that I'm awful at accents, so I think when they heard how good it was, they knew I wasn't kidding!" she said. Best her doctors can tell, it also turned her British. "The person that I am now have been through a lot".

This rare condition was first recorded by French neurologist Pierre Marie in 1907 after a man in Paris spoke a local German dialect after suffering a stroke.

FAS cases had been documented around the world, with patients speaking changing accents from Japanese to Korean, British English to French, American English to British English, and Spanish to Hungarian.

Since then, researchers have published more than 100 case studies of FAS. "I would give anything", she said. It wasn't her personality or achievements that changed, she realized.
