Trump Backs Grassley Immigration Bill

Trump Backs Grassley Immigration Bill

Susan Collins, R-Maine, told reporters last week.

He stressed that "there's no secret plan to push this in any direction".

The White House said on Wednesday it also opposes another bipartisan immigration measure proposed by Senators John McCain and Chris Coons, saying it would boost illegal immigration and fail to fix other immigration practices opposed by Trump.

But a major variable hangs over the efforts of lawmakers as they begin what could be a weekslong and politically bruising process: What kind of legislation will President Trump ultimately support?

Colorado's USA senators say they are focused on protecting Dreamers as the Senate begins debate on an immigration measure, though lofty asks from the White House and a host of competing bills from various factions of the Senate could make getting to 60 votes hard. "Something passed the Senate in 2013, we've spent three months talking to the Democrats about this, there's no reason in the world why, if there is a core 60 votes to support something, we can't achieve it in the next few days".

"This bill is generous, humane, and responsible, and now we should send it to the president's desk", Cotton said in a statement. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday. Democrats have uniformly objected to the cuts to family migration and have issues with the ending of the diversity visa without another way to support immigrants from countries that are otherwise underrepresented in immigration to the US.

"We just don't know where 60 votes are for any particular proposal", said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., citing the votes needed for passage. Many Republicans are in the same boat. "I'm happy that Mr. Schumer sees that both parties can work together to get things done". It said the proposal would "increase illegal immigration, surge chain migration" - a term critics use to describe family-based immigration - and cause other problems.

The Democrats, Schumer said, are focused like a laser on finding a bipartisan bill that can pass the Senate to protect the "Dreamers". McConnell indicated on Tuesday that the debate would be concluded at the end of the week.

The bill would provide a pathway to citizenship for roughly 1.8 million undocumented immigrants brought to the country as minors, but also includes some of Trump's demands, including a $25 billion allocation for his U.S. -Mexico border wall.

That promise has Democrats and other critics anxious that the House could block whatever the Senate is able to pass. Ryan addressed those critics last week, telling reporters that he plans to hold a vote on immigration.

It is unclear if Democrats will give into his demands to limit legal immigration and fund a border wall in exchange for preventing chaos in the lives of the roughly 700,000 now protected by DACA, which Trump said he could expand to cover 1.2 million immigrants.

But Republicans have an ace in the hole; Donald Trump.

The White House has not weighed in on any of the legislative options, but Trump has insisted that any immigration bill also include funding for a wall along the USA border with Mexico. Trump has proposed an extremely generous program that would legalize 1.8 million of the DREAMers, put them on a path to citizenship, and clear a backlog of up to 5 million potential immigrants now awaiting visas.
