The unfortunate link between acne and depression

According to British researchers, there is a link between acne and the mental health disorder.

People with acne have a significantly increased risk of developing major depression, but only in the first five years after diagnosis, according to a large analysis of nearly two million people. However, the risk was at its highest during the first year, with a record of 63 percent increased risk of depression among people with acne. The median age was near 19, however, it ranged from early adolescence to mid-adulthood. "It can have a substantial impact on overall mental health", said Isabelle A. Vallerand, lead author of the study and an epidemiologist at the University of Calgary.

Scientists in the United Kingdom, publishing this week in the British Journal of Dermatology, shared findings that clearly showed an increased risk of experiencing major depression in those with acne, as compared to those without.

The study also found that acne suffers were most likely to be female, younger, nonsmokers and of higher socioeconomic status but were less likely to use alcohol or be obese. Some scientists posit that the connection between the two conditions has more to do with the specific inflammatory response that occurs in skin conditions, which may also be responsible for some mental health issues.

Hmmm. We're not sure if this makes us feel even more grouchy about something we long suspected, or finally vindicated that it's not all in our heads, but in a finding that will likely surprise no one, researchers just confirmed the unfortunate link between acne and depression.

The findings suggest that it is important for doctors to monitor the mood symptoms in individuals with acne and initiate timely treatment for depression.
