Teen Gerard wins slopestyle snowboarding for USA's 1st gold medal

Parrot scored 86.00 in his last run - the very last run of the finals - to pull him onto the podium.

Canada is on the board when it comes to medals at the Pyongchang Olympics.

Less than a year after a fall that almost claimed his life, Canadian snowboarder Mark McMorris was back on the medal podium on Saturday.

Gerard, a 17-year-old from Silverthorne, Colorado, drilled his third and final run on the chilly but sun-splashed course at Phoenix Snow Park.

Interestingly, the United States and Canada earned their first Olympic medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang in the same Olympic event.

Less than 11 months later - despite a laundry list of injuries including a ruptured spleen, fractured jaw and left arm, collapsed lung, pelvic fracture, and rib fractures - McMorris collected the second bronze of his career with a score of 85.20 on his second run.

The Olympics continue all night long on CBC and Sportsnet.

After watching the judges favour a clean but safe performance by Gerard, Parrot made a tactical call on the fly to scale back the degree of difficulty.

Norway claimed all three spots on the podium at the men's 15km + 15km Skiathlon event at the Alpensia Cross Country Centre with Simen Hegstad Krueger winning gold in a time of 1:16.20, eight seconds ahead of Martin Johnsrud Sundby with silver and less than ten seconds ahead of Hans Christer Holund with bronze. "It's worse when you play it safe and it doesn't work out". "I probably shouldn't even be here, so I'm pretty stoked".

While they're both Canadians, the rivalry between Parrot and McMorris is undeniable.

"I'm going to get few more rotations hopefully at practice and step up the rail line a bit", said McMorris when asked how he will look to up his game.

Parrot reached the podium by 4.99 points over Staale Sandbech of Norway, who had 81.01 points.

"I thought I did not miss a thing, and that was, for me, the only thing that I was proud of". The big air finals are set for February 23-24 at Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre.
