Suspect in fatal Needham stabbing set to appear in court Monday

The landlord tells Boston 25 News the woman and her boyfriend, Walsh, had moved into the building back in September 2017.

Millis Police Chief Chris Soffayer and Needham Police Chief John Schlittler both said they've had no prior involvement Walsh and his girlfriend or his parents.

Still in disbelief, Mike Walsh is concerned his son was "out of his mind" when he committed these crimes.

The Norfolk County District Attorney's office said this attack led them to the suspect, Benjamin Walsh's, apartment in Needham.

Investigators say he stabbed his girlfriend, 20-year-old Olivia Bergstrom, in the apartment they shared in Needham then went to a restaurant in Millis and stabbed his parents during a family party. "It's a tragedy", said Molly Cleveland, a neighbor of Walsh's.

People at the restaurant, including owner Jerry Gaita, had to hold Ben down until police arrived.

"This is why it's so surprising", Mike Walsh said.

Police said relatives subdued Walsh and tied him up before police arrived. "I know she's not a person he would ever want to hurt, and Olivia was not a person he would ever want to hurt".

Police found she was stabbed to death. "He has a lot of respect for my wife, and he cares for her, and she's a person he relies on a lot for support".

Mike Walsh said he and his wife are mourning the loss of a dear young woman. "We were doing the best we can to help Ben with all his problems and we were very engaged with medical professionals".

They are expected to survive. "We just need space".
