Steve Smith wins Australia's Border Medal

A tour of South Africa is on the horizon, but Australia's elite cricketers will gather for the Allan Border Medal before departure, with captain Steve Smith the red-hot favourite to win his second. It's unlikely to be Smith winning either of them though and his closest rival for the Allan Border Medal, David Warner, is likely to be in the reckoning again.

Australia captain Smith, who first claimed the accolade in 2015, was a comfortable victor, his 246 votes easily outstripping runner-up David Warner (162) and Nathan Lyon (156) in third.

Smith previously won the medal in 2015 and becomes the fifth player to win it a couple of times.

Western Australia pace bowler Jhye Richardson took home the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award, while Georgia Redmayne snapped up the Betty Wilson Young Cricketer of the Year award. Ellyse Perry should be his equal, taking the Belinda Clarke medal for a second time.

Her 213no in November's Ashes Test is the third-highest women's Test score and an Australian record.

She polled 116 votes, comfortably clear of Beth Mooney's 78, while Megan Schutt was third on 65.

Meanwhile, Ellyse Perry won the Belinda Clark Award for her fine showing a year ago with the double century in the historic Day-Night Ashes Test being the highlight.

Lyon's 62 wickets - the most by any test player in world cricket during the voting period - made him a chance for the test player category.

The 28-year-old, who skippered his team to a 4-0 Ashes victory over England and averaged 67.64 across all formats, was also named Test player of the year at a ceremony in Melbourne. Bailey scored 1,468 runs at a combined average of 52.43.

Smith beat off competition from opening batsman and Test vice-captain David Warner as he secured 246 votes.

Warner was next on the test runs aggregate - 420 runs behind him.

In January, the International Cricket Council voted Steve Smith as the Test Player of the Year.

Also on Monday night, Ricky Ponting, Karen Rolton and Norm O'Neill were inducted into the Australian cricket hall of fame.
