Some Gothamist sites revived by public radio

Dobkin told Wired that they're still looking for additional local radio stations to take over other Gothamist sites like Chicagoist and SFist.

"In a deal largely funded by two anonymous donors, WNYC is acquiring the news site Gothamist, including its archives, domain name and social media assets", the radio station WNYC revealed on its website Friday.

WNYC will run the flagship Gothamist site out of NY, and WAMU in Washington will take over DCist, KPCC said.

The news comes after it was announced on November 2 that billionaire Joe Ricketts was shutting the sites down due to financial struggles one week after employees voted to unionize.

WNYC plans to run Gothamist as a parallel site, featuring stories by WNYC staff, former Gothamist writers and new hires.

"As we've seen a decline in local journalism in even the largest metropolitan areas across the country, even at a time when it's so vital, we remain committed to strong, independent reporting that fills the void", she added.

"The addition of DCist expands the breadth of our local content and increases our digital presence to better serve our community", WAMU general manager J.J. Yore said in a joint statement released by the three stations. "We're going to be trying to rebuild the newsroom", Chung says. I also want to recognize and salute Laura Walker and Joe Ricketts for their leadership and generosity in putting this deal together.

The group of radio stations includes WAMU in Washington, WNYC in NY and KPCC in Southern California.

"At the end of the day, a business, and businesses, need to be economically successful if they are to endure", Ricketts wrote in a memo posted to the websites at the time.

Investing in DCist will help the station's "radio journalism team become more fully multiplatform", he said.

The stations said the acquisition was a "result of a competitive process". SCPR features signature public radio programs from APM, the BBC and PRI.
