Russian Federation could block access to YouTube over opposition video

The Russian government has threatened to block access to Instagram and YouTube in the country, after videos surfaced on both platforms showing a senior government official spending time on a yacht with an oligarch in apparently corrupt secret meetings.

That clip was spotted by the team of anti-Kremlin opposition leader Alexei Navalny, whose investigation into the circumstances around it found that Deripaska was aboard his yacht off the coast of Norway and was joined by Russia's deputy prime minister Sergei Prikhodko.

Navalny in trouble with Russian government and Google over video supposedly capturing a hush-hush meeting on a yacht.

Navalny said: "It wasn't me who took bribes from an oligarch in the form of aeroplane flights and expensive cruises, but the singular, lightning-fast attack of the government is directed against me and my foundation, who exposed the corruption".

The Guardian writes that Navalny claims Deripaska "was briefing Prikhodko on information on the 2016 USA presidential campaign that he had received from Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign manager", although he offers no proof of this.

Deripaska's ties with Manafort date back to 2005, when they reportedly signed a $10 million contract.

A member of Navalny's team posted a screenshot of a message the team allegedly received from YouTube and Google, demanding that he take down one of the videos where he discusses the allegedly corrupt dealings. An oligarch pays for all of this, including young women from escort agencies.

The Manafort allegation is what intrigues some Russian anti-corruption watchdogs.

Deripaska, who emails show was offered briefings on the Trump campaign by Manafort. went to court only days after the investigation's publication, and a judge agreed with his claim that they violated his privacy. The email is among thousands of documents turned over to special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his probe into Russian election interference.

Soon after, Deripaska hit Navalny with a court order for the removal of 14 Instagram posts and seven YouTube videos.

An Instagram representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A video of the oligarch apparently discussing the relationship between the United States and Russian Federation was also published last week by opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
