Ramaphosa promises that #Zexit will be finalised on Monday

The ruling African National Congress Party is close to finalising a power transition that could see the country's deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa, take over from corruption-tarred President Jacob Zuma.

The ruling African National Congress is preparing to make a fresh attempt to dump Mr. Zuma at a national executive meeting on Monday afternoon.

Either Zuma will pay heed to their demands to step aside, or he faces a vote of no confidence in parliament - which he is likely to lose - or face impeachment.

"As we emerge from a period of difficulty, disunity and discord, this centenary year offers us a new beginning", he said.

He said his discussions with Zuma had to be conducted with "care and purpose" and with the aim of uniting South Africans.

St George's Cathedral was at the forefront of the anti-apartheid struggle and during a Christmas mass service a year ago its Archbishop Thabo Makgoba called on the new ANC leadership to act "quickly and decisively" to replace Zuma as head of state. But analysts say there is greater support for him now to step down.

The ANC leader said on Wednesday he and Zuma were holding direct talks over the transfer of power.

"In defence of Madiba's legacy, we will continue to wage a relentless war on corruption and mismanagement of the resources of our country", said Ramaphosa.

Soon after that‚ talks about an exit plan for the president gained momentum and intensified after the ANC top six met with Zuma on Sunday to ask him to "hand over power" to ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa.

And both have used populist tactics, including anti-corruption messages and pledges of economic reform, to lure back the voters who have become disillusioned in recent years.

Jailed for 27 years, the anti-apartheid leader addressed an ecstatic crowd from the balcony of Cape Town's City Hall on February 11, 1990 and was elected as South Africa's first black president four years later.

In 2016, Zuma was found guilty of failing to uphold the constitution by the country's highest court over taxpayer-funded upgrades to his personal home. Whatever leverage Russian Federation may have, it is safe to assume it exists to realise a return on all the efforts made thus far and that this is why President Jacob Zuma has more than likely insisted on the implementation of the nuclear deal as a condition for agreeing to quit.

Zuma, who denies wrongdoing, has been discredited by a series of scandals.

Opposition parties are calling for a parliamentary vote of no-confidence within days.

It remains unclear whether Mr Ramaphosa and Mr Zuma have reached an acceptable deal, as the ANC president declined to address the outcome of their negotiations.
