Qatar Airways opens Canberra-Doha route, takes on Singapore Airlines

Mykonos is just one of many new routes planned by Qatar Airways for 2018, including Canberra, Australia, Thessaloniki, Greece and Cardiff, U.K., among others.

The award-winning airline also recently announced that it will launch non-stop flights to Thessaloniki, its second destination in Greece, from March 2018.

Qatar Airways flight QR906 departed Doha on Sunday 11 February at 07:55, and arrived at Canberra Airport at 08:35 on Monday morning on its first flight linking the capital cities.

The service to Doha is not direct, however, with Canberra's runway deemed too short for Qatar Airways to operate long-haul outgoing flights. MD of Malaysia Airports, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, said: "With the current triple-daily frequencies to Kuala Lumpur catering to the many passengers travelling to destinations in North America and Europe, we believe that the same demand for these destinations from Penang is growing rapidly".

Canberra Airport's Executive Chairman Terry Snow said: "We appreciate Qatar Airways' strong support for the nation's capital".

"It is wonderful that Qatar Airways has made the decision to come to Canberra in 2018 - a year in which our city was recognized as the third best city in the world to visit by Lonely Planet", ACT Chief Minister, Mr. Andrew Barr, who welcomed the arrival of the second global airline to service the capital, added. During the meetings, the new flight to Canberra as well as the airline's ongoing commitment to growth in Australia were discussed.

Canberra, Australia's largest inland city, is home to Australia's Parliament House, and offers a host of museums, galleries and monuments for visitors to explore. Singapore Airlines is also upgrading Canberra-Singapore from four weekly flights to daily in May-2018 but its Canberra traffic may not increase, due to the suspension of the Canberra-Wellington tag. There is no competition on the 12,604-kilometre sector to the Australian capital city, and it should be noted that Qatar Airways does not have permission to sell seats on the Sydney-Canberra leg. Qatar Airways Cargo offers exporters in Australia its innovative QR Fresh solution for the air freight of Australian meat and other perishable products throughout the world via its state-of-the-art hub in Doha.
