Photo of historic handshake between North and South Korea goes viral

As Pence sat with South Korean President Moon Jae-In amid a heavy blanket of security that delayed many fans from getting to the venue for the start, the show was stolen by the colorful group of North Korean cheerleaders dispatched south of the border by leader Kim Jong Un. "We will not allow North Korean propaganda to hijack the message and imagery of the Olympic Games", he said in Japan earlier this week.

Despite threatening to bomb each other off the face of the earth, North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump appeared to be hanging out with each other in downtown Seoul on Friday.

A Moon-Kim summit would mark the first time leaders of the two countries have met in 11 years.

But the United States and Japan have warned against North Korea's "smile diplomacy", through which Pyongyang is apparently trying to weaken worldwide economic sanctions against it by getting close to South Korea.

The opening in Pyeongchang had 6 percent more viewers than the Summer Olympics ceremony in Rio de Janiero in 2016, and it was the most watched Friday night on television since Sochi's first night four years ago. It was the kind of no-frills, I-mean-business attire that she wears in North Korea, where she works for her brother. The ongoing rapprochement mood flared after Kim Jong Un said in his New Year's Day address that he was willing to send an Olympic delegation.

American skaters Lana Gehring and Maame Biney enjoyed the presence of the North Korean supporters.

The two neighboring rival countries displayed an act of solidarity by having some participants from each country honored together during the opening ceremony, and combining the respective women's hockey teams into a singular, unified one.

"The invasion came just after the two Koreas had marched into the stadium behind the blue-and-white unification flag, possibly indicating the stunt was politically motivated". Moon, a dove who wants to resolve the nuclear standoff diplomatically and peacefully, quickly responded to Kim's outreach by offering talks.

The presence at the contest of Kim Yo Jong and Kim Yong Nam, who is North Korea's ceremonial head of state, was a sign that the Olympics have thawed relations between Koreas, which are still technically at war.

While a summit in Pyongyang would signal warming ties on the peninsula, it also risks driving a wedge into the alliance between the US and South Korea.

Pence refused to meet with the North Korean delegation and told USA news on Friday: "I am very confident, as President Trump is, that President Moon will continue to stand strongly with us in our extreme-pressure campaign".
