Pence: 'No daylight' between USA, allies on North Korea

South Korean President Moon Jae-in (front C) walks with Kim Yong Nam (front L), president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and Kim Yo Jong (front R), the younger sister of top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, at the Blue House in Seoul, capital of South Korea, on February 10, 2018.

Hundreds of Twitter users in recent days have referred to "Pyongyang2018", and while some were making a dig at the presence of North Korea at the games, in many cases it appears to have been a simple mix-up.

Crucially, they left South Korean President Moon Jae-in with a diplomatic conundrum that could be a defining moment for his leadership - whether to accept an invitation to Pyongyang for talks with his North Korean counterpart, who presides over a nation where opposition is brutally suppressed, senior officers face execution if they stand in his way, and even his own family members are eliminated if they are perceived to pose a threat to his power.

Vice President Mike Pence is facing backlash for his staunch efforts to ignore North Korean officials at the Winter Olympic Games, even as the two Koreas continued their temporary truce, marching and competing as one team.

Eager to differentiate, provincial authorities have since re-branded the South Korean ski resort as "PyeongChang", using an upper-case "C".

The meeting between President Moon and the DPRK delegates was held informally, not made open to the media.

The North Koreans went through a busy schedule in South Korea as the world watched their every move.

Prior to the opening ceremony on Friday night, Pence arrived late to a dinner reception between the two Koreas and greeted everyone at a main table except for Kim Yong Nam, North Korea's nominal head of state, Reuters reports.

Invited by Moon for lunch at Seoul's presidential palace, Kim Yo Jong verbally delivered her brother's hope for a summit with Moon in Pyongyang, a meeting that she said would help significantly improve ties after an extended period of animosity. The U.S. -led global community has been tightening the screws on North Korea with sanctions created to punish its economy and rein in its efforts to expand its nuclear weapons and missile program, which now includes developmental long-range missiles targeting the U.S. mainland.

One protester, who gave her name only as Laila, told CNN she was angry at President Moon.

"She (Kim Yo Jong) is not charming, she is a dictator's sister", Laila said."She is not looking after North Korean people". He also called for the need of a quick resumption of dialogue between North Korea and the United States.

Others, such as 23-year-old Yoon Jun-young, were angry that North Korea's participation on the global sporting stage had come without any political concessions.

They shared the VIP box with world leaders at the opening ceremony and joined Moon in cheering for the first-ever inter-Korean Olympic team as it debuted in the women's ice hockey tournament.

The official added that Pence is confident that the United States, South Korea and Japan alliance will continue to be strong regardless of inter-Korean talks around the Olympics and whether or not they continue after the games.

During previous attempts at ending the crisis the United States and its allies have provided financial incentives to North Korea or agreed to suspend military exercises with South Korea.

Moon made it clear that the issue was an internal affair and that it was inappropriate for Abe to have brought up the matter, Reuters reported.

The vice president's visit was also marked by bad blood between Pence and some US athletes.
