North Korean leader offers to meet South Korean president

South Korean President Moon Jae-in's office says his lunch meeting with senior North Korean officials including leader Kim Jong Un's daughter has ended.

During Saturday's meeting, the North Korean leader's sister, in her capacity as special envoy of her brother Kim Jong-un, invited the South Korean chief executive to visit the North. Moon said in response that he hopes that the right conditions will be created so that the proposed visit can take place.

The North's delegation arrived on Friday to attend the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and is scheduled to head back to the North on Sunday.

There is a palpable excitement in this isolated, rugged mountain town, as one of the poorest, coldest and most disgruntled parts of an otherwise prosperous South Korea kicks off two weeks of winter sports, spectacle and, from the looks of things, some inter-Korean reconciliation.

"We should firmly keep in mind that any talks where denuclearisation is not a precondition only to buy North Korea more time to complete its nuclear capabilities while they fool us with their peace offensive facade", said Chang Je-won, a party spokesman said, according to Reuters. The leaders sat in a box during the Opening Ceremony, but Pence left early, opting not to shake hands with leaders from North Korea, though he did sit near the sister of Kim Jong Un.

"The 23rd Winter Olympics opened in Phyongchang of south Korea", KCNA wrote in English, using an alternate spelling for the Olympic city and, notably, the lower-case "south" — a style it uses to show it does not endorse the names "South Korea" and "North Korea".

United States Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen, in Pyeongchang to represent the US, were seated directly in front of the North Korean delegation. "It is important to move forward with the drills as planned", Japanese Prime Minister's Shinzo Abe told Moon in what appeared to be an awkward encounter, the Blue House said. "Her being here is not that bad, but I feel North Korea has shown up to the Olympics without paying", Yoon told CNN during Saturday's hockey match between Switzerland and the unified Korean team.

He also continued to speak out about North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile program after a military parade was held Thursday.

What did seem clear was that, deliberately or not, the North Korean government had managed to edge its way onto center stage during the South's biggest global moment in years.

The official added that Pence is confident that the United States, South Korea and Japan alliance will continue to be strong regardless of inter-Korean talks around the Olympics and whether or not they continue after the games.

"Now is not the time to postpone U.S".

"Present there were members of a high-level delegation of the DPRK and its National Olympic Committee delegation, art troupe and cheering group", it went on.
