North Korean delegation's South Korea visit meaningful: Pyongyang media

South Korean President Moon Jae In has rejected a request by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to swiftly resume the country's joint military drills with the United States, his office said Saturday.

She also sits on the rule-making Politburo.

Washington calls it a campaign of "maximum pressure".

Sunday's KCNA report cited Moon as saying inter-Korean relations should be mended by the parties concerned "at any cost as indicated by Chairman Kim Jong Un in his New Year Address". Mr. Moon has said in the past that he only wanted to meet the North Korean leader if they can make progress on nuclear issues.

This exchange highlights the difference in the position of the two leaders.

"They must be over 163cm (5ft 4ins) tall and come from good families", explained An Chan-il, a defector who runs the World Institute for North Korea Studies. National security adviser H. R. McMaster appears to support the risky strategy, while Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis support more diplomatic approaches.

South Korean officials have said Moon was invited to Pyongyang to speak with Jong Un during the talks and lunch that Moon hosted at the presidential Blue House in Seoul on Saturday.

US Vice President Mike Pence, back in Washington after attending the opening of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, said the United States, South Korea and Japan were in complete agreement on isolating North Korea over its nuclear weapons program.

Moon first met the delegation at the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Friday.

The possibility of a summit with Mr. Kim now raises questions over whether Mr. Moon will be willing to extend those measures.

Mattis also said he doubted that the sporting rapprochement would undermine US-South Korean ties.

Rather than aid the administration in reminding the world that North Korea is a violent and repressive country, the media unnecessarily bolstered the message of a regime that has been threatening to destroy the US for decades. He was referring to the North Korean leader's invitation for Moon to visit the North.

"I hope that Pyongyang and Seoul will become closer in the hearts of our people and that the future of reunified prosperity will be hastened", she wrote.

However, given the tales of brutality that frequently emerge from Kim Jong-un's tyrannical regime, being a cheerleader is not as fun as it sounds.

"The South Korean media has gone a bit gaga over her", Mr. Breen said. Once she returned from Switzerland, she began working for the North Korean government.

It was the first time an inter-Korean team had competed at an Olympic Games.

The result: a heady, sometimes surreal, state of affairs in a South Korea that has seen far more threat than charm out of the North.

Mr. Han, however, is not convinced it means anything, saying what North Korea wants most is to reduce pain from worldwide sanctions.

"They wanted to send a message of being not aggressive, of being somewhat more friendly and pliable", he said.

He does not believe Ms. Kim's visit "reflects any change of mind or strategy on the part of North Korea".
