North and South Korea enter Winter Olympics as one

At the age of 30, Kim Yo Jong is likely to be the most powerful woman in North Korea.

Any meeting would represent a diplomatic coup for Moon, who swept to power a year ago on a policy of engaging more with the reclusive North and has pushed for a diplomatic solution to the standoff over North Korea's nuclear and missile program.

The organizers of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics said its servers were hacked by an unidentified attacker during the opening ceremony the previous day.

"All the parties concerned have welcomed this invitation to North Korea...", he said.

Mr Moon said the Koreas should "make it happen" and encouraged the north to return to negotiations with the US.

The prospect of two-way talks between the Koreas, however, may not be welcomed by the United States.

The Trump administration is wary of engagement with the North, which has been subjected to increasingly tough global sanctions, unless it shows clear signs of giving up its nuclear weapons program.

In addition to sending 22 athletes to compete at the games in Pyeongchang, North Korea also deployed a 229-strong all-female cheering squad to root for both nations.

"President Moon responded by saying that the two sides should work on establishing the right conditions to realise the meeting", the South Korean spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said. It recently tested its first batch of three intercontinental ballistic missiles and its most powerful nuclear weapon to date.

President Donald Trump, as well as several USA allies, have agreed to halt all military exercises until after the Olympics, Pence said. NBC tweeted on its official @NBCOlympics page: "A swarm of drones brings us one of the most incredible sights of the #OpeningCeremony".

"We are not going to comment on the issue".

Are these Winter Games having the effect South Korea had hoped, in thawing relations with the north?

Before the torch was lit, our five tiny tour guides emerged from the darkness, holding candles that symbolized the 2016 presidential protests in South Korea, as four well-known Korean singers - Ha Hyun-woo, Jeon In-kwon, Lee Eun-ju, and Ahn Ji-young - crooned John Lennon's "Imagine".

Moon, who returned to the Games venue, joined Pence in the arena and sat next to him, turned around to greet Warmbier, according to a White House pool report.

Pence told reporters that the two leaders "spoke as friends" during his visit to South Korea, and their discussions including the meeting between Moon and the North Korean delegation, led by Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong.

North and South Korea are technically still at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

North Korea has spent years developing its military, saying it needs to protect itself from US aggression.

The IOC and the two Koreas signed a tripartite agreement on January 20 in Lausanne that set out the details of North Korea's Olympic participation, including the number of athletes, the sports they would take part in as well as their joint march.

The opening ceremony in Pyeongchang was disrupted by a cyber-attack, officials said.

Kim Yo Jong is the first member of her family to set foot in this country since the north and south were divided and her grandfather, Kim Il Sung, founded North Korea.
