Narendra Modi's Visit to Palestine: Discussion on Regional Political Process on Cards

Narendra Modi's Visit to Palestine: Discussion on Regional Political Process on Cards

In December, India voted at the United Nations along with 127 other nations against US President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday accused the Left Front government in Tripura of subjecting people to "slavery", and asked the voters to "throw it away".

"We believe in the importance of a possible Indian role.to reach a final agreement based on worldwide consensus and resolutions, in which India and other countries can be part of", news agency PTI quoted Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas as saying.

Modi is expected to arrive in Amman Friday afternoon and meet Jordan King Abdullah II. "We enjoy vibrant multi-dimensional ties with the countries here", he said. Among the ongoing projects in these areas, with a combined investment of US$30 million (Dh11m), is the construction of an India-Palestine tech park, the ministry said.

He said it would be his fifth visit to the Gulf and the West Asian region since 2015.

Describing the Gulf country as a "valued strategic partner", Modi said that India has fast-tracked cooperation with the UAE in all major spheres, including economy, energy, high technology and security.

"The relations between India and Palestine are historical. This visit will culminate the historic ties between the two brotherly people, and will help in increasing and strengthening these ties that we possess", he stressed.

The visit will reaffirm India's foreign policy position that its relationship with one country is independent of its ties with a third country and will de-hyphenate Israel and Palestine after Modi's standalone visit to Israel in July past year.

Mr Netanyahu professed himself "disappointed" by India's United Nations vote, although he said it would not "materially" change relations between the two countries.

Over at least five decades, New Delhi has consistently supported the Palestinian cause, recognising it as a state in 1988.

Modi will hold meeting with Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas and reaffirm support for the country and its development.

India has consistently voted in favour of resolutions supporting the Palestinian cause at global forums, an issue that has bothered strategic partner Israel.

Speaking on apportionment of development funds to Tripura, the prime minister said, "As per the formula for devolution of funds from the Centre, Tripura has always been a recipient of 89% of its (central government) annual budgetary allocations; this is continuing for long but whenever we get any accounting or utilisation certificate, we find that most of the time the funds are unutilized".

Appreciating India's assistance in strengthening Palestinian economy through executing several projects in the Palestinian areas, Abbas said that "he can not forget" New Delhi's support and wishes to further discuss with Modi areas of cooperation in the economic sphere.

After his UAE visit, Modi will travel to Oman in the final leg of his visit from February 11-12. In UAE he will lay the foundation stone for a new temple for the Hindu community living there.

A lot of Palestinian diplomats have received training in India and hundreds of Palestinians have availed scholarships to study at Indian institutions as part of New Delhi's effort towards capacity building in Palestine.
