Manchester United planning defensive reboot

Manchester United planning defensive reboot

Jose Mourinho wants new defenders.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have both received criticism this season for their performances, with the 1-0 loss to Newcastle United on Sunday thought to have been the last straw for Mourinho.

The report goes on to claim that France worldwide centre-half Varane, who made his debut at Real Madrid when Mourinho was manager, is top of the Portuguese's shopping list.

So as things stand for Manchester United, the club have the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof fit for the two spots and despite the Smalling-Jones duo failing to live up to the pressure, Mourinho has continued to pick them in the team.

The report claims that United will try sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City for £50m, and they are interested in a transfer for Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

"They've got the best defensive record because they have the best goalkeeper in the world in David De Gea, and Nemanja Matic out in front who protects them really well", he said.

Jones had a nightmare game against Spurs after scoring an own-goal. They are also mooted to make a move for Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane in order to find a top quality defensive partner for their most accomplished defender, who is now sidelined due to an ankle injury, Eric Bailly. He hasn't played for three months and United are hopeful that he might return, as they prepare to make a trip to Sevilla for the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. They were making decisions all day where you were thinking, 'what are you doing?'

United have had their fair share of injury concerns at the back this season, as Ivory Coast global Eric Bailly has missed the last three months of football due to ankle surgery, while Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof only returned to fitness recently.

Jones and Smalling have been exposed as a partnership in recent weeks.
